Objective

Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) projects are being developed worldwide, with a strong
contribution from France. Various technical solutions and design configurations are proposed
to optimize the mooring system response and associated costs.

The purpose of this internship is to develop an optimization strategy for mooring systems
and investigate new technologies and their impact on the performance of typical configurations.

The internship will be divided into the following steps:

  • Bibliographic review and discussions with suppliers of mooring components.
  • Build a simulation model of a typical mooring arrangement on a pre-defined FOWT floater.
  • Perform extreme and fatigue analyses including Out-of-Plane Bending effects, following the
    Bureau Veritas NI604 guideline applied to a representative mooring system on the
    XCF Floater (developed by MAREAL, a partner of d2m).
  • Propose simplifications of the numerical model and optimization of the mooring arrangement,
    including use of innovative components.
  • Define a global optimization strategy ensuring compliance with both extreme and fatigue criteria.

  • Classification Society Rules.
  • d2m internal tools for naval architecture, mooring analysis and drafting.

Deliverables

  • Model calibration and sensitivity analysis report.
  • Mooring analysis report for the reference configuration.
  • Comparative study of response for various mooring configurations and components.
  • Calculation methodology and proposed optimization strategy.

General conditions

  • Engineering office work – none or few displacements.
  • Based in d2m Engineering offices at Six-Fours-les-Plages (83).
  • Office hours: 09:00 – 12:00 and 14:00 – 18:30.
